Reading and Phonics

Reading at Montalbo

At Montalbo Nursery and Primary School we have a culture where reading is highly valued and enjoyed by everyone. We reinforce the importance of reading through our weekly Book Assemblies, through high quality texts used in lessons and through inspirational reading areas such as our library and reading corners in each classroom. We have recently invested in new home reading books for those children who are currently on the Read Write Inc Phonics program. This has helped us to ensure that all children can access home reading books that are matched to the sounds they have already learned in their Phonics lessons. Our Year 2 and KS2 classrooms are well resourced with a inspiring range of books. Some are from the Oxford Owl range, including Chucklers, Reflect Texts and Traditional Tales, and others are by individual authors such as Roald Dahl classics, Michael Morpurgo novels and Philip Pullman adventures… and that’s only a few of them!

We encourage all of our children, from Nursery to Year 6, to read regularly at home. Reading for just 15 minutes per day can have a huge positive impact on children’s well being, achievement and imagination!

The Book Trust have some great tips and advice for reading with children at home. To find out more visit:  The Book Trust Website

Read Write Inc

Montalbo Nursery and Primary School uses the Read Write Inc approach to phonics. Please see attached policy on how we use the programme.

Phonics Policy

Read Write Inc. provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. Further information can be found on the Read Write Inc. website.
